Biochemical substrates expenses and respiration at short-term starvation of marine planktonic animals ArchiMer
Pavlova, Z; Morozova, A; Gaudy, R; Shchepkin, V.
One of the most important indices at estimation of productivity characteristics of hydrobionts is oxygen consumed in the process of respiration. Usually respiration (standard metabolism) is measured in small-volume respirometres (30-50 ml) where animals' activity is considerably restricted. It may underestimate respiration in comparison to natural one. Therefore respirometres of larger volume were used. Simultaneously under same conditions we tried to estimate energy requirements by expense of main biochemical components of organic matter (lipids, protein, glycogen). Results were used to calculate energy budget and to compare energy expenditures, measured according to consumed oxygen and tissue substrates expense.

Characterization and variations of organic parameters in teleost fish endolymph during day-night cycle, starvation and stress conditions ArchiMer
Guibbolini, M; Borelli, G; Mayer Gostan, N; Priouzeau, F; De Pontual, Helene; Allemand, D; Payan, P.
The aim of the present work was to examine the modifications of the organic composition of fish endolymph under environmental conditions (day-night cycle, starvation and Cl-2-Stress) known to modify otolith growth. Endolymph electrophoretic patterns were compared. An antibody raised against the trout otolith organic matrix allowed examining the variations of organic matrix precursors in the endolymph under the above conditions. Western blot analysis showed bands around 60-80 kDa. A 50% decrease of immunolabelling was observed during the night whereas increases were seen after starvation (factor 3) or stress (factor 2) suggesting that these variations could be related to the organic matrix deposit. A factor retarding in vitro CaCO3 crystallization (FRC) was...

Effect of nutrition on Crassostrea gigas larval development and the evolution of physiological indices Part B: Effects of temporary food deprivation ArchiMer
Ben Kheder, Rym; Quere, Claudie; Moal, Jeanne; Robert, Rene.
In the natural environment bivalve larvae are exposed to variable conditions and can therefore face periods of food shortage. To understand the resistance of early life stages of Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas), larvae were experimentally starved for 4 days at different periods of their development, and the resulting variations in their lipid reserves then analysed using image analysis and biochemical techniques. Faced with a temporary lack of food, the larvae halted their growth in size and weight and started to live off their lipid reserves; this effect was highly marked when the period of food deprivation was at the beginning of larval rearing, but was less marked when food deprivation was after day 14. The larvae conserved their developmental...

Effects de le temperature et du regime alimentaire sur certains parametres de l'immunite cellulaire du loup de mer en elevage ArchiMer
Deschaux, P; Peres, G.
The data showed that antibody response and NK cells activity of a teleostean fish Dicentrarchus labrax (Loup de mer) were maximal when animals were bred at a temperature equal to 18 degree C. A proteinoprive diet enhanced T cytotoxic response and diminished NK cell activity. A fast of 15 days had no effect on these two cellular responses.

Effects of delayed first feeding on growth of the silver catfish larvae Rhamdia voulezi (Siluriformes: Heptapteridae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Lima,Ariane F. de; Andrade,Fernanda F.; Pini,Suelen Fernanda R.; Makrakis,Sergio; Makrakis,Maristela C..
ABSTRACT The effects of the timing of first feeding on the point-of-no-return (PNR) and growth of laboratory reared silver catfish Rhamdia voulezi larvae were studied. The experiment began immediately after the complete absorption of the yolk sac, 3 days after hatching (DAH). The food was provided for the first time on 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th DAH. Zooplankton and newly-hatched Artemia spp. were used to feed the larvae. To evaluate the effect of food deprivation on growth, the standard length and weight of 594 larvae were assessed. Larval growth was significantly affected by the time of first exogenous feeding. The larvae fed from 3rd to 5th DAH showed a significantly higher development than those fed from 6th DAH. The larvae reached the PNR...

Effects of food deprivation in muscle structure and composition of traíra (Hoplias malabaricus): potential implications on flesh quality BABT
Rios,Flavia Sant'Anna; Donatti,Lucélia; Fernandes,Marisa Narciso; Kalinin,Ana Lucia; Rantin,Francisco Tadeu.
Hoplias malabaricus (traíra) were experimentally starved (0 to 240 days) and subsequently re-fed for 30 days (after 90 and 240-d fasting). Long-term starvation produced minor changes in muscle composition, but shrinkage of muscle fibres was a conspicuous result. The diameter of muscle fibres decreased gradually and the spaces among them increased as the starvation period progressed. After re-feeding, fish prior starved for 90 days presented partial restoration on diameter of muscle fibres. However, the fibres remained shrunken after re-feeding following 240-d fasting. While the lipid content did not change, the protein levels fell after 240-d fasting, but they were restored after re-feeding

Etude de la composition corporelle de la sole (Solea solea ) au cours du jeune: Influence de la temperature ArchiMer
Richard, P; Djabali, M; Lagardere, Francoise; Lagardere, J.
The effects of starvation on Solea solea at 10 and 20 degree C in sea water, were studied. At 20 degree C fishes start to die on week 4; at 10 degree C they support a longer starvation period (9 weeks). Proximate analysis shows that protein are more steadily used at 20 degree C than at 10 degree C, contrarily to the corporal lipids which are used at the same rate. Starvation results in a reduction of liver lipids and glycogen. This reduction is more pronounced at 20 degree C : 70% of hepatic glycogen is used at this temperature within the first week of starvation against 30% at 10 degree C.

Evaluating the histological-based condition of wild collected larval fish: A synthetic approach applied to common sole (Solea solea) ArchiMer
Di Pane, Julien; Gendrot, F.; Giraldo, Carolina; Marchal, Paul; Koubbi, Philippe; Loots, Christophe.
In the present study, the histological-based condition of common sole (Solea solea) larvae in the English Channel was evaluated to assess the relevance of experimentally-calibrated indices for wild collected specimens. Based on topographical observation of foregut, midgut, hindgut, liver and pancreas, each of the 202 larvae analysed was attributed one of the six grades of a condition index that was developed for sole in the nineties. In parallel, a synthetic table of 20 criteria historically used as condition indicators was created from an extensive review of the literature. These criteria were related to tissular integrity, cells height, nuclei, presence of prey and vacuolisation of the same five target organs. For each larva, each criterion was scored on...

Functional Characterization of a short neuropeptide F-related receptor in a Lophotrochozoa, the mollusk Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Bigot, Laetitia; Beets, Isabel; Dubos, Marie-pierre; Boudry, Pierre; Schoofs, Liliane; Favrel, Pascal.
Members of the short neuropeptide F (sNPF) family of peptides and their cognate receptors play key roles in a variety of physiological processes in arthropods. In silico screening of GigasDatabase, a specific expressed sequence tag database from the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas, resulted in the identification of a receptor (CgsNPFR-like) phylogenetically closely related to sNPF receptors (sNPFRs) of insects. A reverse endocrinology approach was undertaken to identify the peptide ligand(s) of this orphan receptor. Though structurally distinct from insect sNPFs, three RFamide peptides derived from the same precursor, i.e. GSLFRFamide, SSLFRFamide and GALFRFamide, specifically activate the receptor in a dose-dependent manner, with respective EC50 values...

Heart rate and body weight alterations in juvenile specimens of the tropical land snail Megalobulimus sanctipauli during dormancy BJMBR
Rizzatti,A.C.S.; Romero,S.M.B..
The time course of heart rate and body weight alterations during the natural period of dormancy were determined in active feeding and dormant juvenile specimens of Megalobulimus sanctipauli. In both groups, heart rate markedly decreased during the first 40 days of dormancy, tending to stabilize thereafter. This time period coincided with the decrease in environmental temperature during autumn-winter. At the end of the dormancy period, surviving active feeding and dormant snails showed a significant decrease in heart rate which, however, was significantly greater in the latter group. Total body weight decreased concomitantly with heart rate in dormant snails but remained constant in active feeding snails. Body hydration induced significant increases in...

The total protein and ammonia contents in the hemolymph of Bradybaena similaris (Fèrussac, 1821) during the starvation were determined from August, 1996 to March, 1998. The results revealed a significant variation in the total protein content throughout the period of starvation analized, there being a negative relation between the total protein content and the time of starvation. But the same result was not observed in the ammonia content. After 30 days of starvation there was a reduction of 2,8% of the content of ammonia in the hemolymph. A negative relation between the ammonia content and the time of starvation was observed, but this relation was not significative. It is probable that the degradation of the proteins don't lead to an increase of the...

Larval development of hoplias cf. Lacerdae (Pisces: Erythrinidae) and delayed initial feeding effects BABT
Sirol,Rodolfo N.; Menin,Eliane; Andrade,Dálcio R.; Silva,Martinho A..
Larval development of Hoplias cf. lacerdae was studied under laboratory conditions. After hatching, ontogenetic changes were recorded on food-deprived larvae in 12-hour intervals. Mouth opening occurred after 2.5 days and notochord terminated flexure in 6.5 days. Notochord length increased at a constant rate until complete yolk absorption (13,5 days). Larval dry weight and body height diminished gradually up to 21 days after hatching, when all starved larvae died. Every 12 hours after yolk absorption, groups of larvae (n=15), were separeted, and fed with Artemia nauplii for 10 days. The point-of-no-return (when 50% of larvae were unable to feed or to assimilate ingested food after delayed feeding), was not apparent in this species.

Lecithotrophic behaviour in zoea and megalopa larvae of the ghost shrimp Lepidophthalmus siriboia Felder and Rodrigues, 1993 (Decapoda: Callianassidae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
Abrunhosa,Fernando A.; Simith,Darlan J.B.; Palmeira,Carlos A.M.; Arruda,Danielle C.B..
Food supply is considered critical for a successful culturing of decapod larvae. However, some species may present yolk reserve sufficient to complete their larval development without external food supply (known as lecithotrophic larval development). In the present study, two experiments were carried out in order to verify whether the callianassid Lepidophthalmus siriboia have lecithotrophic behaviour or, if they need external food for their larval development: Experiment 1, larvae submitted to an initial feeding period and Experiment 2, larvae submitted to an initial starvation period. High survival rate was observed in both experiments, in which only 2 megalopae and 1 zoea III died. These results strongly suggest that larvae of L. siriboia are...

Maintenance of discrete bacterial populations in adjacent marine habitats. ArchiMer
Robb, F; Muir, D; Davis, C.
Some mechanisms of selection which operate on marine Vibrio and Pseudomonas strains during survival in dilute environments have been examined. Mannitol uptake and utilisation systems are more efficient in the Vibrio strain compared with the Pseudomonas strain during starvation survival. A Vibrio mutant strain lacking mannitol uptake showed no greater loss of viability during starvation survival than mannitol positive strains. The Vibrio strain appears to be constitutive with respect to mannitol uptake systems, whereas the Pseudomonas strain examined is inducible. Active uptake systems for glucose, glutamate, alanine and aspartic acid were efficiently maintained during starvation survival in the Vibrio strain. Results suggest that membrane uptake systems...

Modeling fish growth and reproduction in the context of the Dynamic Energy Budget theory to predict environmental impact on anchovy spawning duration ArchiMer
Pecquerie, Laure; Petitgas, Pierre; Kooijman, Sebastiaan.
Spawning location and timing are critical for understanding fish larval survival. The impact of a changing environment on spawning patterns is, however, poorly understood. A novel approach is to consider the impact of the environment on individual life histories and subsequent spawnings. In the present work, we extend the Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) theory to investigate how environment variability impacts the spawning timing and duration of a multiple-batch spawning species. The model is successfully applied to reproduce the growth and reproduction of anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) in the Bay of Biscay. The model captures realistically the start and ending of the spawning season, including the timing of the spawning events, and the change in egg number...

Teneur en ADN de la larve de Dicentrarchus labrax : évolution ontogénétique et effet de la privation de nourriture ArchiMer
Bergeron, Jean-pierre; Person, Jeanine.
Sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax larvae were hatched and reared for 34 days in the laboratory to test a recent biochemical index (DNA/C) of larval fish nutritional condition. Variations in DNA/C ratio values were monitored during the whole larval ontogenesis of fed individuals and the effect of starvation was assessed at three developmental stages. Three main periods in the relative DNA content variations were determined in close connection with growth patterns during larval ontogenesis.

The effect of starvation on refeeding, digestive enzyme activity, oxygen consumption, and ammonia excretion in juvenile white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei ArchiMer
Comoglio, Li; Gaxiola, G; Roque, A; Cuzon, Gerard; Amin, O.
Juveniles of the white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei were kept Without food for between 0 to 15 clays to evaluate the impact of starvation oil physiologic state (oxygen consumption, poststarvation refeeding, index, nitrogen excretion, and O:N ratio) and digestive enzymes activity. Physiologic changes were found after 6 days of fasting, and refeeding ability declined as a result. Nevertheless. the shrimp were able to Survive 16 days Without food. Starvation Caused metabolism to drop progressively toward a basal level (21 J (.) h(-1 .) g(-1)) and a decrease in the rate of ammonia excretion, because of the catabolism of amino acids front soluble protein in the hepatopancreas. This decrease led to an increase in digestive enzymes specific activity (U/mg...

The importance of feeding in the larval development of the ghost shrimp Callichirus major (Decapoda: Callianassidae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
Abrunhosa,Fernando A.; Arruda,Danielle C.B.; Simith,Darlan J.B.; Palmeira,Carlos A.M..
The present study investigated whether the callianassid Callichirus major shows a lecithotrophic behaviour during larval development. Two experiments were carried out. In the first experiment, larvae were subjected to an initial period of feeding, while in the second they were subjected to an initial period of starvation. In Experiment 1, 80% of C. major larvae succeeded moulting to juvenile stage in treatment with larvae fed every day. In the treatments with larvae fed for 1, 2 and 3 days there was total mortality before they reached the megalopal stage. In Experiment 2, zoea larvae showed more resistance when subjected to an initial period of starvation in which larvae starved for 1, 2 and 3 days and had survival rates of 100, 60 and 80%, respectively....

The influence of starvation and Eurytrema coelomaticum infection on the nitrogenous products of degradation in the hemolymph of Bradybaena similaris BABT
Souza,Rosana M. de; Gomes,Edna M.; Chagas,Generoso M.; Pinheiro,Jairo.
The urea and uric acid contents in the hemolymph of Bradybaena similaris were analyzed under starvation and Eurytrema coelomaticum infection during 30 days. The urea and uric acid contents in the uninfected and fed snails were 15.090 mg/dl and 9.399 mg/dl, respectively, being the urea/uric acid ratio 1.6. The urea content in starved snails increased to a maximum of 363.237 mg/dl at 15 days, and the uric acid varied to a maximum of 11.470 mg/dl. The urea content in infected snails was reduced to a minimum of 2.123 mg/dl at 30 days of infection and the uric acid increased significatively at 25 days post exposure, being 13.820 mg/dl. A significative relation was not observed between the time of starvation and time of E. coelomaticum infection and the uric...
